But he would prefer that we consider the new album, Get Free, as a celebration of playing music together instead of watching Netflix. So his plans for a big album with lush production shifted 180 degrees. But that obviously wasn’t possible during the pandemic. For years he road tested all of his songs before committing them to tape. Sam tells me how much he loves playing in a trio and how that makes it a lot easier for him to be improvisational. He also describes how architecture and Frank Lloyd Wright can be considered influences to him. In fact his first band was him, his brother, and his father. We begin by discussing his family’s love of music as a big influence on him. He and his band had just finished the final show of their tour the night before and Sam was driving their gear home.
